Uganda rugby player, Desire Ayera, who stole the show on the DJ decks at the Commonwealth games

A video of Desire doing dance moves has been making rounds on Twitter. And many think the team has earned Uganda some good PR internationally.

At the concluded Commonwealth Games Sevens in Birmingham, Uganda’s rugby team – Uganda Sevens – made sure they put up an entertaining showcase.

Some of Uganda’s brilliant kicks, lifts and kick-chases made the highlights of the tourney.

The boys left some really enjoyable moments, from the win against Sri Lanka and Jamaica, a draw against Australia, to stealing the show on the DJ’s booth. No kidding.

After the Uganda Sevens beat Sri Lanka by 38-19 at the Coventry stadium, Desire Ayera felt it was the opportune moment to showcase his deejaying skills. He took to the deejay’s stand and did a set on the decks, just to keep the mood right.

A video of him doing dance moves has been making rounds on Twitter. And many think the team has earned Uganda some good PR internationally.

“Uganda have been a real crowd favorite here. This is Desire Ayera on the decks at half time. Not just a Rugby Sevens player, he’s a deejay, he’s entertaining. The reason this crowd loves Uganda is personified in what you’re seeing here,” said the commentator.

The 23-year-old who plays #8 on the national team started playing rugby while at Makerere College. He then played one year for Sailors and graduated to the senior team Stanbic Black Pirates in 2016.

While at Pirates, he was summoned for the National team training in 2017 but didnt make the cut. The following year, he made it to the 7s team.

In his other life, the graduate of Business Administration does deejaying, going by the name DJ Fufu.

Ayera is young brother to Alema Ruhweza, who also plays on the Uganda national rugby team as a tight head prop. He was among the people from whom Ayera drew inspiration to join rugby.

Uganda finished 10th overall in the Commonwealth Rugby 7s tournament after losing 31-5 to England in the placement game. An improvement from the previous performance in Gold Coast where the team finished 12th overall in 2018.
