“I’m not a bad boy, it was just a character” – Diamond on his role in Netflix reality show

Diamond has had a dramatic love journey. Little wonder, in one of the episodes, he candidly confesses he is not sure how many children he has. Why? Because to this date, women still come to him with children they claim he had with them during previous flings.

If you have watched the Netflix reality show, Young, Famous and African, then you know singer Diamond Platnumz fits the tag of ‘a bad boy’. At least, he admits to it – being a player and a bitch.

“My aka is Lion, Simba, so I want to hunt,” he says.

In the 8-part show, the Tanzanian singing star confesses to the boys that he is a player, he’s a bitch and that this is why he can never settle with Zari.

“I kinda feel like sometimes I don’t deserve her. Like she doesn’t deserve me, because I’m stupid. That’s how I feel. Sometimes when I look at my life, I feel like I have a long f**ckin way to go,” Diamond says.

Meanwhile, he has been flirting with Nadia Nakai (South African rapper, songwriter and TV presenter), never mind that he still shows affection towards his baby mama – Zari.

In Episode 2, Diamond hosts an Arabic night party. But to the surprise of the boys (Quinton Masina ‘Naked DJ’ and Andile Ncube), Diamond has the audacity to invite both Zari and Nadia Nakai. At the party, he dedicates his attention to Zari and they get all cozy.

Only a bad boy who is insensitive to what this would feel like for Nadia would pull such a move.

However, while appearing on the BBC recently, Diamond said he is not a bad boy, and that this was just a role.

“I was supposed to be a bad boy,” the singer said during an interview on BBC Focus on Africa.

When the interviewer insists “you said it yourself”, Diamond says that’s the character he was meant to portray on the show.

“Sometimes, when you’re young, famous and African, there are certain things that people expect you to be. They think you are a bad boy. So, you have to give them what they expect,” he added.

“But I’m a good boy.”

He also delved into how he was overwhelmed by how much he blew up after Young Famous and African was released.

“When it got released, I started getting texts, DMs and my WhatsApp went crazy, from different countries. I knew it was gonna be big but I didn’t think it would be that big. It was #3 in the U.S., #1 in Africa. It was doing good and I’m grateful.”

Diamond assured the show’s fans that a second season is coming.

In fact, he teased that he needs to deal with Andile in the upcoming season. Season One closed after Andile opened up to Diamond that he has a thing for Zari. Diamond is shocked this is coming from his buddy. Like what happened to the Bro Code?

“We cannot stop it there. I need to deal with Andile then if they want to finish it, we can finish it,” Diamond joked during the BBC interview.

A ‘bad boy’ history

Diamond has had a dramatic love journey.

Little wonder, in one of the episodes of Young, Famous and African, he candidly confesses he is not sure how many children he has. Why? Because to this date, women still come to him with children they claim he had with them during previous flings. So, he doesn’t know when the count will stop.

The singer has dated – at least affairs that have been public – Zari (Ugandan socialite with whom he has two kids), Wama Sepetu (Tanzanian actress), Hamisa Mobetto (Tanzanian singer and model), Tanasha Donna (Kenyan singer).

Just this month, a close friend to Diamond confirmed that the singer had finally married (a woman said to be from Zanzibar) in a private ceremony. This comes at a time when rumors have been going around that Diamond and singer Zuchu who is signed under his record label, are dating.
